COVID-19 SOLIDARITY RESPONSE FUND FOR WHO

April 2020–December 2021

JCIE was the Japan partner of the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for WHO (COVID-19 Fund) which was powered by the WHO Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation. This fund enabled Japanese companies, organizations, and individuals to donate to support the work of the World Health Organization (WHO), the vaccine initiative CEPI, UNICEF, World Food Program (WFP), and other international organizations in their fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Contributions to the COVID-19 Fund were being used to track the spread of the virus, equip frontline responders with lifesaving personal protective equipment (PPE), and accelerate vaccine research and development.

JCIE established a Japanese-language portal, in which donations from Japan would go directly through the UN Foundation to the international global health organizations fighting against COVID-19. Corporations and individuals who contribute ¥100,000 or more were also able to contribute through our Japanese-language COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and be eligible for tax deductibility in Japan.

In late December 2021, an independent evaluation of the COVID-19 Fund by IOD Parc was released. The evaluation found that the COVID-19 Fund was “highly successful in meeting the moment early and positioning itself effectively to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
