The Asahi Shimbun published an article based on interviews with members of the ASEAN Parliamentarians, who visited Japan under JCIE’s “Democracy for the Future” project.
In the interview, the parliamentarians express concern over democratic backsliding in Southeast Asia, growing authoritarianism, and weakened judicial independence. They call on Japan’s active leadership in promoting democratic values and a rules-based international order through soft power and strategic diplomacy, given shifting geopolitics as a result of uncertainties surrounding US leadership in the region and rising influence from China.
