33rd Korea-Japan Forum

August 18–20, 2025
Seoul

The 33rd Korea-Japan Forum, co-organized by JCIE and the Korea Foundation, was held in Seoul in August 2025, bringing together over 60 politicians, scholars, journalists, businesspeople, and representatives of private exchange organizations to discuss topics consequential to Japan-Korean relations.

Some of the issues covered included an in-depth look at the current political climate in both countries and their bilateral relations, the state of Northeast Asia and Japan-Korea cooperation in the era of the second Trump administration, and the implications of global economic realignment for future economic collaboration between Japan and South Korea. This year marked the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and a special session was held on this milestone that provided participants an opportunity not only to reflect on the past but also to discuss concrete steps toward building stable, future-oriented relations.

Against the backdrop of shifting international dynamics, participants stressed that Japan and South Korea must work not only bilaterally but also with partners in the region and beyond. They called for both countries to take proactive roles in tackling economic challenges such as supply chain risks and trade tensions. The discussions also pointed to the importance of sharing knowledge and talent in fast-growing areas like AI, biotechnology, and energy, along with initiatives that bring people closer together. Finally, while progress on historical issues was acknowledged, participants agreed that both countries must continue striving to deepen mutual understanding.

In addition, this year’s forum included a courtesy call on South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, a dinner hosted by Interim Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Korea Mibae Taisuke, and a reception hosted by Second Vice Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea Kim Jina.

The 10th Korea-Japan Forum Award ceremony was held on August 19, honoring Chung Ku-chong, chairman of the Korea-China-Japan Cultural Exchange Forum, professor emeritus of Dongseo University, and former journalist, for his substantial contributions to Japan-Korea friendship and the development of the Japan-Korea Forum as the Korean chairman of the Japan-Korea Forum for many years.

Also on the program were presentations by representatives of the 11th Korea-Japan Junior Forum, summarizing their August 11 discussions on the future of Korea-Japan relations and Korea-Japan-US cooperation. In total, 20 undergraduate and graduate students from both countries participated in this year’s Junior Forum.

Following the Forum, acting Japan Co-chair Nagamine Yasumasa (former Japanese Supreme Court Justice and former Japanese Ambassador to the Republic of South Korea), on behalf of Okonogi Masao (Professor Emeritus, Keio University), and Korean Co-chair Yu Myung-hwan (former Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade) released a joint statement on the meeting. The statement is available in Korean and Japanese below.
