ASEAN-Japan Young Leaders Workshop | ASEAN-Japan Cooperation: A Foundation for East Asian Community

In collaboration with the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, Jakarta (CSIS) and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, JCIE conducted a workshop in Tokyo on April 19–20, 2004, aimed at promoting cooperation between Japan and the ASEAN region on issues of shared concern by building mutual understanding and personal networks between emerging political leaders in the two regions. Eight participants from ASEAN member countries took part in the workshop with young politicians in the Japanese Diet and local assemblies as well as young leaders from various sectors of Japan. The participants discussed issues of mutual concern to Japan and ASEAN, such as the rise of China and ASEAN-Japan cooperation. In addition, the ASEAN participants took part in briefing seminars on social, political, and other aspects of Japan in order to deepen their understanding of the country.
