A Gender Agenda: Asia-Europe Dialogue 3

Chia Siow Yue, ed.
2006

This is the third volume and culmination of the A Gender Agenda: Asia-Europe Dialogue project, co-organized by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) since 2001. This volume examines the economic empowerment of women through entrepreneurship development at the grassroots level. Six case studies are presented on initiatives in France, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, the Philippines, and Greece/Turkey. This unique analysis sheds light on the key factors that can hinder or enable economic empowerment and authors consider how to link economic empowerment of women to social change and gender equality. This volume also includes keynote speeches delivered at the final conference in October 2005 in Manila, The Philippines, by Magdalena Sroda, the Polish Government Plenipotentiary for Equal Status of Women and Men, and by Loren Legarda, Philippines Senator.

The cases examined in the studies are as follows:
Indonesia: JARPUK (Jaringan Perempuan Usaha Kecil [Women’s Small Entrepreneurs Network])
Japan: Workers’ Co-operatives and Collectives
The Philippines: The Federation of United Mindanawon Bangsamoro Women Multi-Purpose Co-operatives, Inc. (FUMBMWMPC)
France: Initiatives by Women in Lille
Greece/Turkey: Women’s Initiative for Peace (WINPEACE)
The Netherlands: Mama Cash
