Nine of Australia’s political leaders, including young legislators, party officials, and parliamentary staff, traveled to Japan for a ten-day study tour of Tokyo, Tottori, and Kyoto as part of the Australia-Japan Young Political Leaders Exchange.

Global ThinkNet Fellows | New Approaches to Preventive Diplomacy

Five Global ThinkNet Fellows undertook a study project on preventive diplomacy under the direction of Dr. Hideo Sato, senior advisor to the rector of United Nations University. In October 1999, these researchers began examining such topics as UN peacekeeping activities; the peace-building process in Croatia; the international commitment to solve refugee problems; reconceptualizing the concept of state-nation relationship in Asia; and a new approach to the democratization process in Belarus.

India-Japan Policy Dialogue

The India-Japan Policy Dialogue was held on February 11–12, 2000, in New Delhi. Over 30 prominent researchers and leaders gathered to examine the future of India-Japan relations. Discussions focused on the domestic political and economic situations in each country; emerging global security scenarios; and ways to bolster India-Japan cooperation in the economic, trade, and cultural fields.

Prime Minister’s Commission on Japan’s Goals in the 21st Century

In 1999, JCIE served as the secretariat for the Prime Minister’s Commission on Japan’s Goals in the 21st Century. As secretariat, JCIE organized a consultation visit to Washington DC in 1999 for a small group of Commission members and arranged meetings with foreign policy experts, government officials, scholars, and journalists to discuss domestic trends and policy issues in the United States.

Force, Order, and Global Governance: US, German, and Japan Perspectives

In 1999, JCIE and the Brookings Institution launched a project to help guide the process of consensus-building by examining the key areas of contention in greater depth from the perspectives of the United States, Germany, and Japan.

Guidance for Governance: Comparing Alternative Sources of Public Policy Advice

Beginning in 1999, JCIE and the Brookings Institution initiated a comparative assessment of the state of alternative sources of policy advice in eight democratic countries. Drafts of the papers were presented and discussed at a workshop held in Tokyo on May 28, 2000, as well as during one of the sessions at the Global ThinkNet Conference, held in May 2000.

US-Japan Dialogue on Asia

In May 1999, a small meeting of 18 top opinion leaders from Japan and the United States was convened in Tarrytown, New York, by former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and former Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party Koichi Kato. The goal of the meeting was to discuss future US-Japan cooperation in Asia.
