Roundtable on Japan’s Migration Policy | Symposium on Accepting Foreigners and Japan’s Future

As part of JCIE’s Roundtable on Japan’s Migration Policy series, a major symposium was convened to examine the question of “Accepting Foreigners and Japan’s Future—Toward a Basic Law on Foreigners Residing in Japan.” The event drew roughly 200 people from government, business, nonprofit, and research organizations, and the foreign community in Japan.

Migration and Demographic Challenges: New Policy Approaches in Japan and Germany

Japan and Germany face tremendous common challenges stemming from their aging societies. The taboo in Japan surrounding the issue of immigration is starting to dissipate, and this symposium marked the the first time that Japanese parliamentarians from two different parties sat down to openly and positively discuss the need to open the country to immigrants.

In February 2018 JCIE organized a seminar on “Strength in Diversity or Increasing Polarization? The Challenge of Local Politics in the US,” in which participants shared perspectives on the current political scene in the United States, offering a perspective the media alone cannot convey of the Trump phenomenon and the impact that American diversity is having on politics and vice versa.
