With the cooperation of the Institue of Strategic and Development Studies in the Philippines, the 6th APAP Forum was held in Cebu, Philippines. Nearly 35 participants from 13 countries throughout the Asia Pacific region gathered for the meeting. The five sessions of this forum centered on two major themes: “Vision of Asia Pacific in the 21st Century” and “Integrating New ASEAN Members into Asia Pacific.”
The first session featured a discussion by Carolina Hernandez (Institute of Strategic and Development Studies), Charles Morrison (East-West Center), and Koji Watanabe (JCIE) that addressed recent developments in Asia Pacific. In the second and third sessions, a team of younger scholars from various countries in Asia Pacific, led by Simon Tay (Singapore Institute of International Affairs), presented papers focusing on the theme, “Vision of Asia Pacific in 21st Century.” Jusuf Wanandi (Centre for Strategic and International Studies) conducted the fourth session with Kao Kim Hourn (Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace) and Phan Doan Nam (Institute for International Relations), which featured an in-depth discussion on engaging new ASEAN members in the Asia Pacific community. The final session allowed participants to reflect on the ideas brought forth at the previous sessions as they discussed the future research and dialogue agenda for Asia Pacific. A conference report was published in English in 2001.
