The Eighth APAP Forum was held on March 21–23, 2003, in Kunming, China, with the cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The forum focused on the theme of “The Rise of China and the Changing East Asian Order,” which was being addressed in a corresponding APAP study evaluating the opportunities and challenges that the emergence of China as a regional power presents for the task of regional community building. Drafts of the papers from the study were presented in the forum sessions.
The first session featured a discussion on political and economic developments in China. In the second and third sessions, the perspectives of neighboring Asian countries as well as ASEAN countries and Australia on the rise of China were presented. Also, a special session was held to discuss the cultural implications of the rise of China on the region. The fourth session dealt with the topic of “China and the Asia Pacific Community.” The final session provided the opportunity for participants to discuss the future research and dialogue agenda for Asia Pacific.
