Diet Women's Study Group | 6th Meeting

January 21, 2020
Tokyo

Nobuo Tanaka, chairman of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and former executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), met with the Diet Women’s Study Group to discuss Japan’s energy security policy. He desribed the four major upheavals and revolutions that are taking place in the world energy supply—the US shale revolution, the solar revolution, China’s clean energy revolution, and the digital revolution—and stressed that countries throughout the world are reevaluating their approaches to energy security.

Among the strategies Tanaka discussed were preventing and mitigating the impact of any potential Middle East crisis,  ensuring the stability of Russia’s natural gas supply, cooperating with China on energy security within multilateral frameworks, and rethinking Japan’s domestic energy market and infrastructure to promote the use of renewable energy.
