Japan is currently facing a number of challenges, including demographic change, rising healthcare costs, workforce shortages, and health security issues that are becoming increasingly transnational and forming a common agenda with counterparts in Asia and the Pacific.

While the Special Issue examines Japan’s health system and the reforms needed to address emerging challenges, it also presents a central proposition: Japan’s future health system must be reformed, but these reforms cannot be achieved in isolation. They require stronger partnerships, policy dialogue, and mutual learning with countries across Asia. This issue argues that regional collaboration should be viewed not only as a means of supporting other countries, but also as an essential component of Japan’s own health system transformation.

This webinar will provide a platform to discuss how Japan and its Asian partners can jointly shape resilient, equitable, and sustainable health systems for the future. We hope this webinar will foster new ideas and partnerships for advancing health system reform through regional collaboration.
