Third Intellectual Dialogue on Building Asia's Tomorrow

June 18–19, 2000
Bangkok, Thailand

The Third Intellectual Dialogue on Building Asia’s Tomorrow was held in Bangkok on June 18–19, 2000, and focused on “Cross-Sectoral Partnerships in Enhancing Human Security.” The dialogue injected further momentum into the vital process of addressing human security concerns arising from the Asian financial crisis and of rethinking the development strategies of Asian countries. The purpose of the two-day conference was to discuss the findings of three in-depth case studies relating to sustainable development and human security that were recommended at the conclusion of the Second Intellectual Dialogue. These case studies focused on the environmental challenges facing the region, the practical benefits of the social investment fund as a form of social safety net, and the role of civil society in meeting Asian countries’ human security needs.

The meeting was attended by more than 80 participants and obsevers, including scholars and researchers on sustainable development, government officials, and representatives from international organizations, philanthropic foundations, and NGOs. The first three sessions were devoted to in-depth discussion of the case studies, followed by a fourth session at which participants discussed ideas for more effective cross-sectoral partnerships. On June 18, Thai Foreign Minister H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan hosted a dinner for the participants at which he gave a speech on human security. A summary of the presentations, discussions, and case study papers was published in 2002.
