JCIE has a long-standing commitment to promoting closer ties with its neighbors in Asia Pacific and has been co-organizing the Korea-Japan Forum annually since 1993. Those meetings draw roughly 50 participants from the two countries from various sectors to discuss a range of economic, political, and security issues relevant to Korea-Japan ties and ways to enhance the relationship. At a recent meeting of the Forum, it was suggested that a smaller group of key opinion leaders be convened to examine the issues in greater depth. As a result, JCIE and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held the inaugural “Korea-Japan Strategic Dialogue” in Tokyo on June 8–10.
The meeting convened 14 Japanese and Korean experts on diplomacy and security and 15 on economy and trade for a two-day seminar on the two country’s foreign policies, the macroeconomic and financial issues that they face, the nexus between economic and security issues in the region, and how the two countries can better cooperate in the regional and global contexts. The following morning, 7 of the participants, accompanied by the heads of JCIE and KIEP, presented the group’s findings at a meeting with Japanese Diet members.
