On April 7, 2011, JCIE and the US-Japan Council co-sponsored a roundtable on Capitol Hill with US Congressional members and experts on US-Japan relations. This was organized as a follow-up to the February 22 New Shimoda Conference organized by JCIE, which convened top leaders from Japan and the United States in Tokyo. Discussions centered on how to strengthen US-Japan relations in order to meet future challenges and how to create a more robust and meaningful partnership between the two countries.
The devastating Japanese earthquake and tsunami, occurring just 17 days after the Shimoda Conference, only further reaffirmed the critical importance of efforts to reinvigorate US-Japanese dialogue and cooperation. The April 7 roundtable participants, including several US and Japanese leaders who attended the Shimoda Conference, shared some key findings from the conference and exchanged views on how to best move forward with these recommendations in light of the widespread changes to Japan and its relations with the rest of the world brought about by the recent disaster.

About the Shimoda Conference
In 1967, the initial Shimoda Conference brought together top Japanese and American leaders from different walks of life for the first high-level policy dialogue between the two countries. Headlined by Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield and including emerging Japanese leaders such as future Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone, it was the first dialogue to bring together American and Japanese leaders from politics, government, business, and academia for high-level policy discussions.
