1999 Japanese Young Political Leaders Delegation to the US

The 1999 delegation traveled to Washington DC, Connecticut, Indiana, and Kentucky, where they spoke with public officials, economic policymakers, opinion leaders, and representatives from the nonprofit sector. In Washington, Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) and Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) briefed the group on US domestic politics and Jack Pritchard, Director of Asian Affairs at the National Security Council (NSC), spoke with them about US-Japan relations. 

In Connecticut, the participants met with the mayor of Bridgeport to discuss the city’s urban revitalization programs. Then, in Indiana, the eight-member delegation received briefings on the state’s economic prospects, its ties with Japan, and the workings of state government from the state’s lieutenant governor and top officials from the state Democratic and Republican party organizations. The group concluded its trip in Kentucky, where it visited a Toyota automobile plant and met with top state officials from the administrative, legislative, and judicial branches.
