FACILITATION OF INTERNATIONALIZATION INITIATIVES FOR MIYAZAKI PREFECTURE

1998–2003

JCIE has carried out two initiatives on behalf of Miyazaki Prefecture to help develop their internationalization efforts. In April 1998, JCIE was commissioned by the Miyazaki Prefectural Government to conduct research on ways of expanding international activities by local actors. The purpose of the research was to provide analyses of current international activities in Miyazaki and possible future policy options for furthering such activities. Based on the report, Miyazaki Prefecture set forth a four-year policy for internationalization in the prefecture that began in the year 2000.

Miyazaki Prefecture hosted the Foreign Ministers Meeting for the Kyushu-Okinawa Talks of the 2000 G-8 Summit. To follow up on this, with the cooperation of JCIE, Miyazaki Prefecture issued a three-year plan in 2001 for a series of symposiums to commemorate the summit and take up the issue of internationalization. JCIE was commissioned to organize the first of these symposiums on July 12, 2001, on the theme of “Building Bridges to the World—Local Cultural and Arts Activities” at the Seagaia World Convention Center. On July 16, 2002, JCIE organized a second symposium on “International NGO Networks and Local-Level Internationalization.” The third symposium was held on July 8, 2003, on the theme of “Local-Level Internationalization through Sports-Related Exchanges.”
