The potential for conflict in Asia Pacific lends the search for a new and more stable regional security order a continuing urgency. As part of this effort, the annual Asia Pacific Security Outlook monitors changing perceptions of national security, key defense issues, and national contributions to regional and global security. Unlike similar reports, the Outlook brings together a multinational team of security experts offering individual country reports.
Written for the interested public and defense experts alike, the Outlook covers traditional security issues such as the Korean peninsula, territorial disputes, and weapons modernization.
This 1997 edition focuses on subjective perspectives. Thus many of the views and quantitative data presented in the country perspectives will be debatable. All countries examined are members of the ASEAN Regional Forum, an intergovernmental collaboration promoting practical dialogue among Asia Pacific countries on key security issues.
