International Advisory Group on Global Health

In 2019 and 2020, Japan hosts a range of critical international meetings, from the G20 Summit to the 7th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 7), and the Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G). In order to help the Japanese government make strategic use of these events in advancing global health, in April 2018 the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) convened a half-year consultative process in collaboration with five key Japanese government agencies.

Regulatory Harmonization Task Force

In 2018, JCIE’s Executive Committee on Global Health and Human Security created a Task Force for Promoting Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Regulatory Harmonization in Asia. The group, comprised of 15 experts from industry, academia, and government, seeks to formulate recommendations on how Japan could improve access to pharmaceuticals and medical devices in Asia.

This article shares policy recommendations to develop: global structures that enable effective preparedness for health emergencies, knowledge-sharing platforms for health system resilience and sustainability, and research, development, and system innovations for global health security.

Policy Recommendations for the 2016 G7 Summit in Japan: Toward Resilient and Sustainable Universal Health Coverage (UHC)

At this side event to the 2016 Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC), members of JCIE’s Global Health Working Group (GHWG) presented their draft policy recommendations for the G7 Ise-Shima Summit in May 2016 with an emphasis on governance for global health in response to and in preparation for health crises.

A final dissemination seminar for the Global Action for Health System Strengthening report was held in Nairobi, in collaboration with the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF), on April 17–18, 2009.

Dissemination Seminars in the United States—Global Action for Health System Strengthening

Two dissemination seminars for Global Action for Health System Strengthening were organized in Washington DC, one on March 17, 2009, that was organized in collaboration with the Center for Global Development (CGD) and which targeted experts from think tanks and US government agencies, and another on March 19, 2009, in collaboration with InterAction, which targeted representatives of humanitarian and development NGOs.

Dissemination Seminar in Asia—Global Action for Health System Strengthening

The primary goal of this seminar was to share with a broad group of global health stakeholders the outcomes of a recent report produced by an international task force of global health experts.

This report was submitted to the Japanese and Italian governments in January 2009 for consideration for the 2009 G8 Summit agenda.

G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit Follow-up | International Conference on Global Action for Health System Strengthening

A high-level international conference was convened in Tokyo on November 3–4, 2008, to explore the creation of a global strategic framework for strengthening health systems in developing countries around the world, with a particular emphasis on clarifying the role of the G8 in the field.

Executive Committee on Global Health and Human Security

The Executive Committee on Global Health and Human Security is a unique public-private platform that facilitates the Japanese government’s policymaking on global health and public-private collaboration in that field.
