In the hopes of opening the doors to a brighter future for young people of foreign origins who are living in Japan, JCIE has launched a major grant program, Supporting Youths of Diverse Roots and an Inclusive Society (YDRIS).
1st Networking Conference of the Diverse Roots, Inclusive Society Initiative
JCIE held its first networking Conference as a part of the Supporting Youths of Diverse Roots and an Inclusive Society Program. About 30 participants from the eight organizations implementing the selected projects attended to deepen their understanding of the activities of each participating organization and the significance and network of the Diverse Roots, Inclusive Society program.

COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund | The Significance of Private Donations in the Global COVID-19 Response
JCIE held a virtual meeting to deepen the understanding of COVID-19’s global impact and the important role the WHO plays in the global response. The discussion featured Naoko Yamamoto, assistant director-general of UHC and health systems at the World Health Organization (WHO), and Masataka Uo, CEO of the Japan Fundraising Association, with JCIE’s Satoko Itoh as a moderator.
Second Round of Grants for the COVID-19 Joint Philanthropic Initiative with JWLI
JCIE is workingwith the Japanese Women’s Leadership Initiative and the Fish Family Foundation to facilitate small grants to 7 organizations in Japan to help them respond to the needs arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Responding to the Needs of Older People During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Sharing Lessons Learned
This webinar shared lessons from the United States on how the epidemic has impacted older persons, particularly those in long-term care facilities and offered a platform to share observations on the US experience—including both challenges and best practices—and compared that with the experience to date in Japan and Malaysia to draw out lessons that can inform policy for the COVID-19 pandemic and for future outbreaks as well.

Tadashi Yamamoto Memorial Seminar | Japan in the World: Sustaining Democracy
This year’s Tadashi Yamamoto Memorial Seminar featured experts on democratic governance and human security who discussed Japan’s potential role in supporting democratic transitions in Asia. The second panel featured four Japanese Diet members discussing the state of Japanese politics and how the political situation in Japan might evolve in the coming years.
UK-Japan 21st Century Group | 33rd Conference
The 33rd annual meeting of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group convened in Japan on October 6–9. The group held discussions on a broad range of issues that affect the two countries and their relationship.
Korea-Japan Strategic Dialogue 2016
At a recent meeting of the Korea-Japan Forum, it was suggested that a smaller group of key opinion leaders be convened to examine the issues in greater depth. As a result, JCIE and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) held the inaugural “Korea-Japan Strategic Dialogue” in Tokyo on June 8–10, 2016.
