Cooperation with the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium
The Asia Pacific Philanthropy Consortium (APPC) was formally launched in 1994 as an informal network of like-minded institutions that support the growth and development of Asian grantmaking philanthropies. The consortium aims to improve framework, raise awareness, facilitate resource mobilization, and contribute to the development of resources for the nonprofit sector.
Corporate-NGO Partnership in Asia Pacific
In August 1997, JCIE began researching the effectiveness of philanthropic collaboration in Asia Pacific with an 18-month grant from the Hitachi Foundation. The research entailed assessing 12 successful instances of philanthropic collaboration, which were aimed at providing a means to understand how these corporate-NGO partnerships work and to cast light on the philosophy behind corporate philanthropy.
Council for Asia-Europe Cooperation (CAEC)
The main purpose of the CAEC was to encourage and facilitate greater cooperation among Asian and European intellectuals and policy specialists in order to enhance discussions about the future direction of Asia-Europe relations. CAEC is managed by a steering committee comprising 12 research institutions in Asia and Europe.
Force, Intervention, and Sovereignty
Under the direction of JCIE Senior Fellow Koji Watanabe, a team of researchers examined the growing debate in Asia over the appropriate use of force, the conditions under which intervention merits international sanction, and the limits of national sovereignty.
Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue
The Northeast Asia Cooperation Dialogue (NEACD) was launched in 1993 and JCIE served as Japan secretariat in 2005 and 2006. The 17th meeting drew intense media attention and examined national perspectives on regional security, issues related to nuclear verification, and prospects for Track 1 and Track 2 diplomacy.
Strengthening Nongovernmental Contributions to Regional Security Cooperation
JCIE conducted a study from 2009–2015 to explore how such nongovernmental initiatives can concretely contribute to regional security cooperation in East Asia.
Strategic Assistance | Asia Pacific Stability and Disaster Relief
A joint research program between the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and JCIE that explored how the United States and Japan can elevate humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) operations to be a key component of their combined regional security strategy.
The Civil Society Sector and NGO Activities in Asia and Europe—International Survey Project
The Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs (Keizai Koho Center) and JCIE, recognizing the need for healthy partnerships between the business and civil society sectors, launched a survey of NGOs designed to contribute to the building of sound cross-sectoral partnerships.
The Intellectual Infrastructure for East Asian Community Building
JCIE undertook a study project that surveyed the current state of the intellectual network within the East Asian region and researched strategies for strengthening the intellectual infrastructure for East Asian community-building.
