Facilitating Philanthropy

1979–Present

As part of its longstanding efforts to strengthen the nonprofit sector and to respond to global challenges, JCIE facilitates philanthropic programs that assist Japanese donors in contributing to organizations at home and around the world, as well as corporations and individuals outside of Japan that are seeking to work with Japanese nonprofits.

JCIE has been deeply involved in corporate philanthropy in Japan since the early 1970s, when it began serving as an information clearinghouse for Japanese corporations on philanthropy and organizing study missions to the United States for corporate executives. In 1979, it founded the Asian Community Trust (ACT), Japan’s first charitable trust supported by general fundraising, and in 1997, the Levi Strauss Foundation and JCIE launched Japan’s first donor advised fund. In recent years, our philanthropic work has responded to pressing challenges—such as those posed by the 2011 disaster in Japan and the COVID-19 pandemic—as well as longer-term social challenges.

To date, we have facilitated or advised on more than US$30 million in grantmaking to over 670 nonprofit organizations around the world. In addition, JCIE has organized a wide range of research projects, dialogues, and exchanges on philanthropy that are designed to strengthen the nonprofit sector in Japan, disseminate best practices through the Asia Pacific, and deepen international understanding on philanthropic practices
